The 3 Most Successful Types of Therapy for Depression

April 9, 2024 by Maureen Keown

If you or someone you love is experiencing depression, it’s important to know the various therapy types available. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to counseling. However, most therapists will utilize specific therapeutic techniques and philosophies that will shape the course of your therapy sessions.

So, keep reading to learn about three of the most successful therapy types for depression and how to determine which therapeutic style is right for you.

#1: Cognitive Therapy

The foundation for cognitive therapy is that your thoughts directly affect your emotions. A cognitive therapist will assess your thought life to help you replace the negative thoughts or self-talk (also known as cognitive distortions) with positive messages.

This type of therapy aims to help you learn to identify typical patterns of negative thinking, turn off negative thinking, and choose positive thoughts instead, improving your mood. A session with a cognitive therapist will consist of structure and goal focus. You can typically expect to receive homework to complete between sessions.

#2: Behavioral Therapy

This action-based therapy type is focused on changing undesirable behaviors by reinforcing desired behaviors.

The umbrella of behavioral therapy covers methods known as aversion therapy and systematic desensitization. It is highly focused on the behavior as the problem. The goal of behavioral therapy is to learn new behaviors to minimize the issues causing your depression.

When treating depression, therapists will often use behavioral therapy with cognitive therapy (CBT).

#3: Interpersonal Therapy

In some cases of depression, the causes include interpersonal conflicts and a lack of support. This is where interpersonal therapy (IPT) can prove beneficial. Through IPT, you will closely examine relationships with family members, friends, co-workers, and others to identify issues or conflicts.

The therapist will also guide you in developing healthy conflict-resolution and communication skills, often through role-play. You will also learn how to develop a better support network.
