Identifying the Unexpected Signs of Depression in Men

January 2, 2024 by Maureen Keown

Depression in men does not always manifest as typical symptoms like sadness or lethargy. While every individual is different, the signs of depression may be challenging to spot in men if they try to hide it or are accustomed to suppressing their emotions. Unfortunately, many men believe it’s a weakness to expose how they feel, so they hide their pain and depression. Keep reading to learn more about signs of male depression that may not be obvious.

Why Some Men Try to Hide Depression

Some, but not all, men try to hide their true feelings behind a façade of strength or stoicism. Perhaps they grew up with parents who shamed them for showing emotion. Or they may have been molded by a culture that taught them men shouldn’t be sensitive. These are reasons why family members and friends need to be aware of unexpected signs indicating male depression.

3 Signs of Male Depression You May Not Expect

#1: Avoiding Family Time

If you notice a man who was the center of family time is now withdrawing, this may be depression. While you may initially think it is rude or that the person is selfish, it could be that depression is keeping him from wanting to be a part of activities with the family he would typically enjoy. It may seem easier to withdraw than to attempt to put on a happy face and act “normal.”

#2: Working Too Much

Overworking can signal that a person is trying to avoid dealing with emotions and symptoms of depression. When the male drowns himself at work, he can prevent family members and situations where he feels he should behave in a certain way. At work, he can be on autopilot and accomplish tasks without facing emotions or depression.

#3: Problems with Sexual Performance or Desire

If your partner has sexual performance issues or shows a lack of interest, it may be a sign of depression. It’s easy to take offense and feel like something is wrong with the relationship. However, some men seek help for erectile dysfunction or sexual performance issues only to find out that depression is the source of the problem.
