Common Causes of Marital Discord

August 11, 2022 by Jessica Bassett

While marriage troubles can feel very lonely, you are not alone in your suffering. Couples all around the world and from every walk of life struggle with issues that leave their marriages less than satisfying. It may help to learn a little about some of the most common causes of marital discord. Keep reading to find out what issues are plaguing marriages today and how you can get the help you need if your marriage is in trouble.

7 Issues Causing Marriage Problems

While the specifics and dynamics of each marriage relationship are different, there are common themes of marital discord. Here’s a list of seven common problems:

1. Finances

This is easily the most prevalent struggle married couples face. From arguing how to spend it and save it to discussing who makes more or should make more, it tends to be a difficult topic to navigate.

2. Sex and intimacy

The frequency of sex is usually the issue that comes up most. However, previous experiences and personal preferences are also common topics. Intimacy outside of sex is another issue for many couples.

3. Infidelity

When one or both partners is unfaithful, it can be incredibly complicated to rebuild trust and move forward. Infidelity can be sexual or emotional.

4. Communication

Lack of or ineffective communication has destroyed more marriages than almost anything. With healthy communication skills, couples can overcome nearly any challenge. But without communication, it’s nearly impossible to grow as a couple.

5. Roles and division of responsibilities

When a husband or wife feels forced into a role or certain responsibilities without help from the other, they can become bitter and resentful. Healthy communication can help couples discuss these important topics and come to a more peaceful place in the relationship.

6. Parenting

Few things are as challenging in a marriage as parenting children. Deciding if and when to have them and how to raise them are common disagreements couples face. Each partner tends to come with their own baggage from their childhoods which can impact their parenting style.

7. In-Laws

Issues related to in-laws and extended family members are another common problem couples face. It’s a complex topic that involves many people and a whole lot of emotions. However, learning how to discuss and navigate extended family issues together is a crucial marital skill that is possible to learn.
